1. Georgia was founded on December 25, 1732 by James Oglethorpe. The colony was named after King George II of Great Britain, and Oglethorpe led a group of settlers to establish the new colony in what is now Savannah.
2. On December 25, 1944, a tragic event took place in Georgia when a train carrying U.S. Army soldiers derailed, killing more than 100 people. The cause of the accident was due to brakes on the train failing to work properly as it traveled over a bridge.
3. In 1946, Georgia-born baseball legend Ty Cobb was voted into the Baseball Hall of Fame on December 25. Cobb was known for his aggressive playing style and his impressive career statistics, including the highest batting average of all time.
4. On December 25, 1864 during the Civil War, Union troops led by General Sherman captured the city of Savannah in Georgia. The siege lasted for several weeks, but ultimately resulted in victory for the Union forces.
5. December 25, 2010 brought severe weather to Georgia when a historic blizzard hit the state, dumping up to 10 inches of snow in some areas. The storm caused widespread power outages and travel disruptions, and led to a state of emergency being declared.
