1. April 1, 1820 was the date of Maine's official statehood. It became the 23rd state of the United States after separating from Massachusetts. Maine was the first new state to enter the Union after the original 13 colonies.

4. The deadliest tornado in Maine history struck on April 1, 1991. The tornado hit the small town of Unity, killing one person and injuring several others. It caused significant damage to homes and businesses in the area.
5. On April 1, 2004, Maine's Supreme Judicial Court ruled that same-sex couples had the right to marry under the state's constitution. This decision was the first of its kind in the United States and paved the way for other states to follow suit. However, it wasn't until a decade later, in 2014, that same-sex marriage became legal in Maine under state law.
