1. In 1933, Missouri became the first state in the United States to collect a state sales tax of one cent per dollar spent. This was implemented on April 1st and is still in effect today.

2. On April 1st, 1891, the first electric streetcar line was introduced in St. Louis. The streetcars were powered by underground cables, and the first line was established between Tower Grove Park and the Missouri Botanical Garden.

3. In 1865, a group of Confederate soldiers led by General Sterling Price attempted to invade Missouri from Arkansas. The invasion was unsuccessful and was known as the "Price Raid." The raid began on March 23, but it was on April 1st that the Confederate forces were defeated at the Battle of Booneville.

4. On April 1st, 1981, the city of Branson, Missouri, became a popular tourist destination when the first live music show debuted. The show, called the "Baldknobbers Jamboree," featured the Mabe family and their bluegrass and country music.

5. The Kansas City Royals debuted on April 1st, 1969, as an expansion team in major league baseball. The Royals went on to win the American League pennant in 1980 and the World Series in 1985.
