1. The establishment of Vermont's first constitution:

On April 1, 1777, Vermont established its first constitution, making it the first state to do so after the Declaration of Independence. Vermont's constitution was also the first in the world to prohibit slavery. It was considered a unique document as it gave power to its citizenry.

2. Vermont's Admission to the Union:

On April 1, 1791, Vermont became the 14th state to be admitted to the United States, becoming the first state outside of the original thirteen colonies to join the Union.

3. The opening of Vermont's first ski resort:

On April 1, 1934, a group of enthusiastic winter sports enthusiasts, led by the famous Norwegian skier, Asbjornsen, opened the first ski resort in Vermont. The resort was located on Pico Peak, where it still operates today as a popular winter destination.

4. Vermont's role in the Underground Railroad:

On April 1, 1850, Vermont passed the first law in the nation that prohibited slave-catchers from taking African Americans from the state. Vermont was also known for being an active participant in the Underground Railroad, a network of people and safehouses that helped enslaved people escape to freedom.

5. The Vermont ECHO Lake Aquarium and Science Center is opened:

On April 1, 2003, the Vermont ECHO Lake Aquarium and Science Center opened its doors to the public. The state-of-the-art facility offers interactive exhibits and educational programs to help visitors learn about the ecology of Lake Champlain and the surrounding region.
