1. In 1966, a severe blizzard hit North Dakota and lasted for four days. The storm caused a death toll of 145 people and approximately 30,000 cattle.
2. On April 10, 1818, the first permanent settlers arrived in Pembina, North Dakota. It was established as a fur trading post by the North West Company in the late 18th century.
3. In 1959, North Dakota Governor John Davis signed a bill that authorized the creation of a state flag. The current flag consists of a blue field with yellow lettering that reads “North Dakota” above a bald eagle with outstretched wings.
4. The Minot Air Force Base was activated on April 10, 1957. It is one of only two Air Force bases that house intercontinental ballistic missiles, making it a significant strategic location.
5. On April 10, 2017, North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum declared a drought emergency due to severe drought conditions throughout the state. This declaration authorized state agencies to "utilize all necessary resources to combat the drought."
