1. Idaho became a state on July 3, 1890, but it wasn't until April 12, 1891, that the first session of the Idaho State Legislature was held. At this session, lawmakers created the first state budget, set salaries for officials, and passed laws on a variety of topics.

2. On April 12, 1912, the RMS Titanic set sail on its fateful voyage from Southampton, England. Among the passengers onboard were Mrs. James Wardle of Boise, Idaho and her three children. Unfortunately, only one of the children survived the sinking of the Titanic.

3. The Idaho State Police was established on April 12, 1939. The force was created to provide law enforcement services across the state and to help coordinate efforts with local police departments.

4. On April 12, 1962, astronaut John Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth. Glenn's historic flight aboard the Friendship 7 spacecraft lasted just under five hours and brought him worldwide recognition.

5. Idaho is known for its excellent skiing and snowboarding, and on April 12, 2009, the ski resort at Sun Valley closed for the season. Sun Valley is one of the top ski destinations in the United States, and its closing marked the end of another successful winter season.
