1. In 1783, the Continental Congress ratified the Treaty of Paris, which officially ended the American Revolutionary War. Maryland played a significant role in the war effort, with soldiers from the state fighting in key battles such as the Battle of Camden and the Battle of Yorktown.
2. On April 14, 1865, President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated at Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C. John Wilkes Booth, a Maryland native, was the assassin. Booth was later caught and killed by Union soldiers.
3. In 1939, the Baltimore Orioles played their first game as a member of the International League. The Orioles were originally a minor league team, but went on to become one of the most successful franchises in Major League Baseball history.
4. On April 14, 1951, the University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP) officially became a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). UMCP is known for its strong athletic programs, particularly in basketball and football.
5. In 1986, the Baltimore Colts selected quarterback Jim Harbaugh with their first-round pick in the NFL Draft. Harbaugh went on to play for several NFL teams and later became a successful head coach, leading the San Francisco 49ers to the Super Bowl in 2013.
