1. In 1907, the city of Duluth experienced its worst natural disaster when the St. Louis River flooded due to heavy rains. Over 400 homes were destroyed and 23 people lost their lives.

2. On April 15, 1920, the Minnesota State Capitol was completed after nine years of construction. The building, which is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, features a dome covered in real gold leaf.

3. In 1947, a devastating tornado swept through the town of Amboy, killing eight people and destroying nearly every building in its path. It remains one of the deadliest tornadoes in Minnesota history.

4. April 15, 1961 marked the first Major League Baseball game played in Minnesota, when the newly-formed Minnesota Twins (formerly the Washington Senators) played their home opener at Metropolitan Stadium in Bloomington.

5. The inaugural running of the Boston Marathon took place on April 15, 1896, and included 15 participants. Over a century later, on April 15, 2013, the marathon was the site of a tragic bombing that killed three people and injured hundreds more. Two brothers, Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev, were later found to have carried out the attack.
