1. In 1910, a massive wildfire broke out in North Dakota, burning over 300,000 acres of land and leaving hundreds of families homeless.
2. In 1922, the state's first radio station, KFYR, went on the air in Bismarck. It was the first radio station in North Dakota and one of the first in the entire country.
3. In 1942, the U.S. Army began construction of the Garrison Dam on the Missouri River in North Dakota. The dam, which was the fifth largest in the world at the time of its completion in 1953, created Lake Sakakawea and provided hydroelectric power to the region.
4. In 1983, North Dakota native and astronaut Karen Nyberg was born in Parkers Prairie. Nyberg would go on to become one of the few women to pilot the Space Shuttle and spend six months aboard the International Space Station.
5. In 2013, an historic blizzard hit North Dakota, dumping up to 18 inches of snow in some areas and causing widespread power outages. The storm was one of the worst in state history and caused millions of dollars in damage.
