1. On April 2, 1860, the Pony Express made its first delivery in Nevada. The service was a fast way to send mail between the East and West Coasts, and played an important role in connecting Nevada's mining towns to the rest of the country.
2. In 1910, Nevada passed a law legalizing prizefighting. This led to the famous Reno Prizefight on April 2, 1910, between Jack Johnson and Jim Jeffries. The fight, dubbed the "Fight of the Century," was highly controversial due to Johnson's status as an African American champion.
3. On April 2, 1931, the Nevada State Prison in Carson City suffered a massive fire. The blaze started in the prison's paint shop and quickly spread, killing 31 inmates and injuring many others. The tragedy led to improvements in safety standards at the prison.
4. In 1943, a B-24 bomber crashed near Pioche, Nevada, killing all 12 crew members on board. The crash was caused by engine failure, and the wreckage is still visible today.
5. April 2, 2013, marked the opening of the High Roller, the world's tallest observation wheel, in Las Vegas. The 550-foot-tall wheel provides stunning views of the Las Vegas Strip and surrounding desert.
