1. In 1871, on April 20th, the Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy Railroad laid tracks through Grand Island, Nebraska, connecting the town to the rest of the nation's rail network. The arrival of the railroad spurred significant growth and economic development in the region, helping to make Grand Island a transportation hub and a major agricultural center.

2. On April 20, 1912, delegates from across Nebraska gathered in Lincoln to participate in the Republican State Convention. During the convention, they endorsed William Howard Taft for president and selected a slate of candidates for state and national offices, including U.S. Senator Norris Brown, who would later serve as Nebraska's governor from 1903 to 1907.

3. In 1933, on April 20th, a powerful tornado tore through southeastern Nebraska, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. The tornado, which had winds estimated at over 200 miles per hour, destroyed homes and buildings in the cities of Shickley, Tobias, and Carleton, and killed at least five people. The storm was one of the deadliest tornadoes in Nebraska's history.

4. On April 20, 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Highway Beautification Act into law, which aimed to reduce visual pollution along America's highways and encourage the preservation of scenic areas. The law was inspired in part by Lady Bird Johnson's efforts to clean up Washington, D.C., and her belief that the beauty of America's natural landscapes should be protected and preserved.

5. In 2014, on April 20th, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Husker football team played its annual spring game at Memorial Stadium. The game, which is a popular event for fans and alumni, saw over 61,000 attendees pack the stadium to watch the team scrimmage and get a glimpse of the upcoming season. The Huskers went on to finish the 2014 season with a record of 9-4.
