1. In 1775, on April 20, the New Jersey Assembly authorized the formation of a military organization to support the American Revolution. The New Jersey Battalion was composed of six companies and was commanded by Colonel Nathaniel Heard.

2. April 20, 1929 was the day of the Bergen County fire, which was one of the worst disasters in the history of New Jersey. The blaze destroyed the downtown area of Little Ferry and New Milford and caused the death of eighteen people.
