1. Earth Day was founded on April 22, 1970 by Senator Gaylord Nelson. The idea came to Nelson after witnessing the aftermath of an oil spill in California. The day was designed to promote awareness and appreciation for the Earth's environment.

2. In 1889, the Oklahoma Land Rush began. Kansas residents were among those who rushed to claim land in what is now Oklahoma, leading to the eventual creation of the Oklahoma Territory.

3. In 1861, the first Kansas killed in the Civil War was buried in Leavenworth. Private William B. Cantrell lost his life in a skirmish near Independence, MO, becoming the first of many Kansans to fall in the war.

4. On April 22, 1915, the deadliest tornado in Kansas history struck the town of Greensburg. The EF5 tornado killed 11 people and caused extensive damage to the town.

5. Kansas native and astronaut Ronald Evans died on April 22, 1990. Evans was a member of the Apollo 17 mission and walked on the moon in 1972. He later served as backup command module pilot for the Skylab 3 mission.
