1. On April 24, 1953, an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.6 struck the Klamath Falls region of Oregon. The quake caused damage to buildings and caused landslides, but there were no reported fatalities.
2. In 1855, on April 24th, the Treaty of Middle Oregon was signed between the United States government and several Native American tribes, including the Cayuse, Umatilla, and Walla Walla. The treaty established a reservation for these tribes and paved the way for further negotiations.
3. On April 24, 1883, the Oregon State Legislature passed a law establishing the Oregon Agricultural College (now known as Oregon State University) in Corvallis, Oregon. The college aimed to provide practical education in agricultural and mechanical arts.
4. In 1975, on April 24th, the first-ever Dunkin’ Donuts location in the state of Oregon opened in Portland. Today, there are dozens of Dunkin’ Donuts locations throughout the state.
5. On April 24, 1916, the Oregon State Penitentiary in Salem suffered a major fire. The blaze caused extensive damage to the prison and killed three inmates. The fire was later determined to have been caused by faulty electrical wiring.
