1) On April 25, 1635, a group of English settlers led by John Winthrop Jr. arrived in present-day Portland to establish a fishing and trading settlement. They named it Casco Bay and it later became a thriving port city.
2) In 1775, Paul Revere rode to Portsmouth, New Hampshire to warn American patriots that the British were coming. He stopped in Kittery, Maine on April 25 and recruited two local men to assist him on his journey.
