1. On April 27, 1789, Maine became a district of Massachusetts. Prior to this date, Maine was a part of the Province of Massachusetts Bay.
2. In 1905, the Belfast and Moosehead Lake Railroad suffered a catastrophic accident on April 27 in Burnham, Maine. The accident caused the deaths of 23 people and dozens more were injured. It is considered one of the worst train disasters in Maine history.
3. On April 27, 1923, the last of the World War I soldiers from Maine finally returned home. They had served in the American Expeditionary Forces, which fought in France during the war.
4. In 1969, two bombs exploded in the Maine State Capitol building on April 27. The bombs were placed by members of the United Freedom Front, a radical left-wing group that opposed U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War.
5. On April 27, 1990, L.L. Bean, the famous Maine-based outdoor retailer, opened its first store outside of Maine in McLean, Virginia. The store was an instant success, and L.L. Bean went on to open many more stores across the United States.
