3. In 1986, a massive fire broke out at the Sheraton Hotel in Chicago, killing one person and injuring dozens more. The fire was caused by a faulty electrical fixture, and resulted in more than $20 million in damages.
4. On April 28, 1992, a jury in Simi Valley, California acquitted four LAPD officers of charges stemming from the Rodney King beating. The verdict sparked widespread riots in Los Angeles, which lasted for several days and resulted in more than 50 deaths.
5. In 2000, the final episode of the popular television series "ER" aired. The show was set in a fictional Chicago hospital, and had been on the air for 15 seasons.
