1. In 1908, the Wyoming State Penitentiary opened in Rawlins. It was the first prison built by the newly formed Wyoming State government and had a capacity for 225 prisoners. The prison would go on to play a significant role in Wyoming's criminal justice system for over a century.

2. In 1913, the first automobile club in Wyoming, the Cheyenne Motor Club, was organized. The club was formed in response to the rapid increase in automobiles on the roads and aimed to promote safe and responsible driving. The club also lobbied for better road conditions and played a key role in the development of Wyoming's early highways.

3. In 1954, a major oil discovery was made in the Powder River Basin. The discovery marked the beginning of a new era in Wyoming's energy industry and led to the rapid growth of the state's oil and gas production. Today, the Powder River Basin is one of the largest coal-producing regions in the United States.

4. In 1980, a major earthquake struck the Teton Range in western Wyoming. The earthquake, which measured 6.9 on the Richter scale, caused significant damage to the region's infrastructure and resulted in two deaths. The earthquake also caused a massive landslide in the nearby Gros Ventre Range, creating a new lake that is now a popular tourist destination.

5. In 2006, Wyoming hosted the first Winter X Games in Aspen. The event, which showcases the world's best extreme winter sports athletes, brought national attention to Wyoming and helped to establish the state as a hub for winter sports. Since then, Wyoming has continued to host major winter sports events, including the Grand Teton Snowboard and Ski Challenge and the World Championship Snowmobile Hillclimb.
