1. On April 30, 1782, a naval battle was fought off the coast of Florida between the British fleet and Spanish ships. The battle lasted for several hours and resulted in the Spanish victory.

2. In 1812, on the same date, East Florida was annexed by the United States and became a territory along with West Florida. East Florida became a separate territory in 1822.

3. The infamous Hurricane Andrew made landfall in South Florida on April 30, 1992. It caused widespread devastation, taking many days for rescue and recovery efforts to come into effect.

4. On April 30, 1928, the Tamiami Trail was completed, providing the first road link between Miami and Tampa. This 275-mile-long roadway across the Everglades made it easier to travel across Florida.

5. Florida celebrated Arbor Day on April 30, 1929, as more than 100,000 trees were planted across the state. Florida has been celebrating Arbor Day on the third Friday of January since 1945.
