1. On August 10, 1846, the United States Congress passed the An Act to Establish the Smithsonian Institution. This act created the Smithsonian Institution, which is currently the world's largest museum and research complex, consisting of 19 museums and galleries, a zoo, and 9 research facilities.
2. August 10, 1861, marked the Union Army's first major victory in the Civil War at the Battle of Wilson's Creek. This battle occurred in western Missouri, and the Union victory helped establish federal control of the state.
3. August 10, 1909, saw the first flight of the first airplane designed and built by an African American. African American inventor and aviator William J. Powell created the Powell-Hannibal plane, which successfully flew in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
4. On August 10, 1987, the town of Concrete in Washington State set the world record for the most concrete poured in a single day. Over 100 trucks and a 75-foot concrete pump poured 5,500 cubic yards of concrete, setting a new world record.
5. August 10, 2003, marked the final day of the Bison Roundup at Yellowstone National Park. The roundup is an annual event to manage population levels and resources within the park. The bison are rounded up, tested for disease, and some are auctioned off to Native American tribes for cultural and subsistence purposes.
