2. In 1786, Shays' Rebellion, a protest against high taxes and oppressive government policies, broke out in Massachusetts. On August 11 of that year, rebel forces clashed with state militia at the Springfield Armory, a key military installation. The rebellion was eventually put down, but it helped to spur the adoption of a new federal constitution.

5. On August 11, 1975, the Boston Celtics acquired future Hall of Fame player Dave Cowens in a trade with the Golden State Warriors. Cowens went on to lead the Celtics to two NBA championships and was named league MVP in 1973.
