1. 1781: The Battle of Groton Heights occurred during the American Revolutionary War. British soldiers burned down the town of New London and captured Fort Griswold in Groton, resulting in the deaths of nearly 90 Americans.

2. 1843: The first successful steam-powered vessel on international waters was launched in Norwich, Connecticut. Known as the SS Great Britain, it was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and made its maiden voyage from Bristol, England to New York City.

3. 1868: The Connecticut State Agricultural Society held its first fair in Meriden. The fair showcased agricultural and industrial advancements made in the state and became an annual event, known today as the Connecticut Agricultural Fair.

4. 1915: The first race at the newly constructed Hartford Speedway took place. The racetrack, located in West Hartford, hosted various competitions until its closing in 1937.

5. 1971: The U.S. Women’s Open golf tournament was held at the Rolling Hills Country Club in Wilton. The event was won by golfing legend JoAnne Carner, her first major championship victory.
