1) On August 13, 1966, civil rights activist James Meredith began his second attempt to complete a lone march from Memphis, Tennessee to Jackson, Mississippi. The first march the previous year had ended in Meredith being shot and hospitalized, but he was determined to continue his fight for voter registration and desegregation.

2) In 1969, the city of Biloxi, Mississippi was hit by Hurricane Camille, one of the strongest and deadliest hurricanes in U.S. history. The storm caused extensive damage and flooding, and Mississippi Governor John Bell Williams declared a state of emergency.

3) On August 13, 1956, the Mississippi State Sovereignty Commission was established by the state government. The Commission was created to maintain white supremacy and to spy on and undermine civil rights organizations and activists operating in the state.

4) In 1996, the Mississippi Gulf Coast was hit by Hurricane Danny, causing significant damage and power outages. Despite the storm's intensity, no deaths were reported.

5) On August 13, 2002, the Mississippi Supreme Court issued a ruling upholding a lower court's decision that the state's flag, which featured the Confederate battle emblem, could continue to be flown. The decision sparked controversy and protests from civil rights groups and led to calls for a new, more inclusive state flag.
