1. Oklahoma became a state on August 14, 1907. At 4:16 p.m., President Theodore Roosevelt signed the proclamation that officially made Oklahoma the 46th state in the United States. This day is celebrated as Oklahoma Statehood Day and is a state holiday.

2. On August 14, 1935, the infamous Dust Bowl reached its peak in Oklahoma. A severe drought had been plaguing the region for years, and a combination of high winds and dry soil resulted in enormous dust storms that devastated crops, farms, and homes. The Dust Bowl ultimately forced many Oklahomans to move west in search of work and a better life.

3. In 1959, the longest-serving mayor in Oklahoma City history, Patience Latting, was elected on August 14th. Known for her progressive policies and tireless work for civil rights, Latting served as mayor for 14 years and was instrumental in the establishment of the Oklahoma City Arts Council and the construction of the Myriad Gardens.

4. August 14, 1876, saw the birth of Will Rogers, one of Oklahoma's most beloved and famous residents. Rogers was a humorist, actor, and social commentator who used his wit and charm to become one of the most popular celebrities of the early 20th century. He was often referred to as "Oklahoma's Favorite Son."

5. On August 14, 2013, a massive tornado struck the Oklahoma City suburb of Moore, killing 24 people and injuring hundreds more. The EF5 tornado, which had winds up to 210 miles per hour, caused extensive damage to homes, schools, and businesses in the area. The disaster prompted renewed efforts to improve tornado warning systems and increase disaster preparedness in Oklahoma.
