1) On August 14, 1813, a group of men from Louisiana and Mississippi crossed into Texas and launched an attack on the Spanish fort at Nacogdoches. This event marked the beginning of the Gutierrez-Magee Expedition, a failed attempt to liberate Texas from Spanish rule.
2) August 14, 1845 is the date when the United States officially annexed Texas, making it the 28th state in the Union. This came after years of political turmoil and military conflict with Mexico.
3) In 1872, on August 14th, the famous Texas Ranger Frank Hamer was born. Hamer is best known for his involvement in the capture of notorious criminals Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow in 1934.
4) On August 14, 1912, the SS Cuba, a passenger ship traveling from Galveston to New York, caught fire and sank off the coast of Louisiana. Over 100 people died in the disaster, making it one of the worst maritime accidents in Texas history.
5) In 1966, on August 14th, the University of Texas at Austin suffered a tragedy when a sniper opened fire from the top of the clock tower on campus. The shooting lasted for over an hour and resulted in the deaths of 16 people and numerous injuries. The incident shocked the nation and led to changes in gun control laws.
