1. In 1790, Vermont became the 14th state in the United States. This made August 14th an important date in Vermont history, as it marked the day of Vermont's statehood.

2. In 1861, the first regiment of Vermont volunteers was mustered into service for the Civil War. The unit was known as the "Green Mountain Boys," and they would go on to serve with distinction throughout the war.

3. The Vermont State Fair, one of the oldest agricultural fairs in the country, was first held on August 14th, 1846. The fair is still held annually, and attracts thousands of visitors from around the region.

4. In 1903, Gutzon Borglum began work on carving the faces of four American presidents into Mount Rushmore. Borglum, a native of Vermont, had previously created a number of public sculptures in the state.

5. On August 14th, 1927, the first aerial circumnavigation of the globe was completed by a team of aviators led by American pilot Wiley Post. Post was a native of Texas, but his aircraft, the Winnie Mae, was designed and built in Vermont by the Vermont Aircraft Corporation.
