1. Florida became a U.S. Territory – On August 15, 1810, Florida officially became a U.S. territory. This happened after the U.S. government purchased Florida from Spain.

2. Florida had the first feral monkey colony – In 1930, monkeys were introduced to Florida's Silver Springs State Park. Unfortunately, some of these monkeys escaped and created a feral colony. Today, there are around 200 wild monkeys living in Florida.

3. Space launches – August 15 is a significant date in Florida's space history. On this day in 1967, NASA launched the Lunar Orbiter 5 spacecraft. In addition, on August 15, 1977, NASA launched the Voyager 2 spacecraft.

4. A massive hurricane struck Florida – In 2004, Hurricane Charley hit Florida on August 15. The Category 4 hurricane caused extensive damage and power outages, and left 10 people dead.

5. Florida became a state – On August 15, 1845, Florida became the 27th state in the U.S. This happened after Congress passed a resolution admitting Florida to the Union.
