1. In 1785, the Treaty of Fort McIntosh was signed on August 17, which resulted in the cession of much of modern-day Ohio and a portion of what is now West Virginia to the United States from several Native American tribes, including the Wyandot, Delaware, Ottawa, Chippewa, and Potawatomi.

2. On August 17, 1877, Joseph Chicago, a Choctaw tribal member living in Kentucky, was found guilty of murdering William N. Edwards in a dispute over a horse race. Chicago was the first Native American to be executed by the state of Kentucky.
