1. In 1807, John Colter, a member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, became the first white man to enter what is now Yellowstone National Park. Colter's travels and reports of the park's stunning natural beauty helped to establish it as a popular tourist destination in Wyoming.

2. On August 17, 1867, the first trainload of cattle was shipped out of Wyoming on the newly completed Union Pacific Railroad. The shipment marked the beginning of Wyoming's significant contribution to the cattle industry and established the state as a major player in the beef industry.

3. In 1898, Esther Hobart Morris became the first female justice of the peace in the world in South Pass City, Wyoming. Morris played a significant role in the women's suffrage movement and helped pave the way for women's involvement in politics and the legal system.

4. On August 17, 1959, a devastating earthquake struck the town of Hebgen Lake, Montana, just north of the Wyoming border. The quake caused a massive landslide and created a new lake, which was named Quake Lake. The disaster resulted in 28 deaths and caused significant damage to the surrounding area.

5. In 1985, the town of Jackson, Wyoming, was the site of the first summit meeting between US President Ronald Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev. The two leaders met for four days to discuss arms control and other important issues in what became known as the "Grozny Summit." The meeting helped to improve relations between the two superpowers and contributed to the eventual end of the Cold War.
