1. In 1776, the Declaration of Independence was read to the Continental Army in New Brunswick, New Jersey. This was before it was publicly read in Philadelphia on July 8th.

2. The Ritz Theater in Haddon Township opened on August 2, 1927. This historic theater still stands today and has hosted many famous performers and movies throughout its history.

3. In 1943, the USS Indianapolis was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine off the coast of New Jersey. This tragic incident resulted in the loss of nearly 900 sailors and Marines.

4. On August 2, 1975, the first major-league game was played at the newly built Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia. The Phillies defeated the Chicago Cubs 2-1 in front of over 55,000 fans.

5. The Battleship New Jersey, one of the most decorated battleships in U.S. history, was commissioned on August 2, 1943. The ship served in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War, and is now a museum in Camden, New Jersey.
