1. In 1937, the first newspaper comic strip of the popular character "L'il Abner" was published, created by cartoonist Al Capp, who was born in New Haven, Connecticut in 1909, but later lived and worked in Seattle, Washington.
2. In 1975, the Pacific Northwest experienced a significant heat wave, with temperatures reaching up to 100 degrees Fahrenheit in some areas. It was reported to be the hottest day of the year, and Seattle Mayor Wes Uhlman even declared a state of emergency.
3. In 1984, the Washington State Lottery held its first drawing, resulting in two people winning $1 million each. The lottery was created earlier that year by state legislature as a way to generate funds for education and other state programs.
4. In 2007, the Seattle Seahawks played their first preseason game at Qwest Field (now known as CenturyLink Field), which opened earlier that year. The sold-out game was against the Minnesota Vikings, and the Seahawks won 34-17.
5. In 2017, the Washington State Ferries system celebrated its 65th anniversary. The system is the largest of its kind in the country, serving over 22 million passengers annually on its 10 routes throughout Puget Sound.
