1. On August 22, 1780, during the American Revolution, the Battle of Fishing Creek (also known as the Battle of Catawba Ford) took place. Patriot forces led by General Thomas Sumter were able to repel an attack by British forces under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Banastre Tarleton, despite being outnumbered and outgunned.

2. August 22, 1831 saw the beginning of the Nat Turner Rebellion, a revolt of enslaved people in Virginia. The rebellion, which lasted for two days and resulted in the deaths of dozens of white people, sparked intense fear and violence throughout the region and led to the passing of stricter laws regulating slavery.

3. On August 22, 1868, a group of white supremacists known as the Ku Klux Klan attacked a Republican Party rally in Laurens County, South Carolina. The attack, which resulted in the deaths of six people and the injury of dozens more, was part of a larger campaign of violence and intimidation aimed at preventing Black people from voting or participating in politics.

4. August 22, 1893 saw the opening of the Charleston Naval Shipyard, which became an important center for shipbuilding and repair throughout the 20th century. The shipyard played a major role in both World War I and World War II, and was also responsible for the construction of several notable vessels, including the USS Yorktown.

5. In 1967, August 22 was the date of the Orangeburg Massacre, a tragic incident in which South Carolina Highway Patrol officers fired on a group of unarmed Black students who were protesting racial segregation. Three students were killed and dozens more were injured, and the incident sparked widespread outrage and condemnation.
