1. In 1834, the first trading post in what is now Wyoming was established by William Sublette and Robert Campbell on the Green River. This post, known as Fort William, would become an important stop on the Oregon Trail.

2. The Wyoming Territory was created on July 25, 1868, and on August 23 of that year, the first territorial governor, John A. Campbell, took office. He would serve in this position for three years before being replaced by John W. Hoyt.

3. In 1875, the first railroad in Wyoming was completed, connecting Cheyenne with the Union Pacific main line. This would make transportation and commerce much easier and would lead to the growth and development of many towns throughout the state.

4. On August 23, 1899, Butch Cassidy and his gang robbed a Union Pacific train near Wilcox, Wyoming. This was one of the last major train robberies in the United States before the advent of automobiles and airplanes made such heists more difficult to pull off.

5. The University of Wyoming was founded on October 6, 1886, and the first classes were held on September 15, 1887. On August 23, 1927, the university dedicated its new Memorial Gymnasium, which was built in honor of the Wyoming soldiers who died in World War I. The gymnasium is still in use today and is known as the "War Memorial Fieldhouse."
