2. In 1862, the Dakota War began in southwestern Minnesota. The war lasted for six weeks and resulted in the deaths of hundreds of settlers, Dakota people, and soldiers.
3. In 1921, the Minnesota State Fair opened for the 44th time, with over 578,000 people attending the annual event.
4. In 1950, the Minneapolis Lakers signed George Mikan, one of the greatest basketball players of all time. Mikan led the Lakers to five NBA championships in six seasons.
5. In 1991, the Minnesota Twins retired the number 29 in honor of Rod Carew, a hall of fame baseball player who played for the Twins for twelve seasons. Carew won the American League batting title seven times and was an All-Star eighteen times.
