1. In 1893, the Maine State Pomological Society held their annual meeting in Portland. This organization is dedicated to the promotion of fruit culture in the state of Maine.

2. In 1920, the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified, which granted women the right to vote. Maine was one of the first states to ratify the amendment, doing so on September 8th of that year.

3. In 1950, Hurricane Easy struck Maine, causing widespread damage and flooding. Several towns experienced significant damage, and five people lost their lives as a result of the storm.

4. In 1971, the Maine Industrial School for Girls in Hallowell closed its doors after 88 years of operation. The institution, which had been the subject of controversy and allegations of mistreatment, was replaced by a more modern, rehabilitative facility.

5. In 1999, the Maine Lobster Festival held its annual event in Rockland. This festival is a celebration of the state's most famous seafood export, and attracts thousands of visitors each year.
