1. In 1920, Oklahoma became the 26th state to ratify the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution, which gave women the right to vote. On August 26 of that year, Governor James B. A. Robertson signed the measure into law, making Oklahoma one of the earliest states to grant suffrage to women.

On August 26, 1935, Tulsa hosted the first National Air Races, an event that showcased the latest innovations in aviation technology and attracted thousands of spectators from all over the country. The races continued throughout the 1930s and helped establish Tulsa as an important hub for the aviation industry.

3. In 1959, Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh was born in Lockport, New York. McVeigh's bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building on April 19, 1995, resulted in the deaths of 168 people and was one of the deadliest acts of domestic terrorism in United States history.

4. August 26, 1985, saw the opening of the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City. The Hall of Fame, which features exhibits on the history of gymnastics and interactive displays, has inducted more than 350 athletes and coaches since its inception.

5. On August 26, 2016, Lois Duncan, an acclaimed young adult author and native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, died in Bradenton, Florida. Duncan wrote more than 50 books during her career, including the suspense novel "I Know What You Did Last Summer," which was later turned into a popular movie. Duncan spent the later years of her life in New Mexico but returned to Oklahoma frequently, often speaking to students and visiting her hometown of Sarasota.
