1. In 1883, the first Texas State Fair opened in Dallas. The fair was a huge success, drawing more than 8,000 visitors in its first year, and it has continued to be a popular attraction in the state ever since.

2. On August 26, 1920, the 19th Amendment to the US Constitution was ratified, giving women the right to vote. Texas was one of the first states to ratify the amendment, doing so on June 28, 1919.

3. On August 26, 1937, blues musician Lightnin' Hopkins made his first recording in Houston, Texas. Over the course of his career, Hopkins would become one of the most influential and respected blues performers in the world.

4. In 1970, the Texas Rangers played their first game at the newly-constructed Arlington Stadium. The team had previously played at Turnpike Stadium in Arlington, but the new stadium offered a larger capacity and better amenities for fans.

5. On August 26, 2017, Hurricane Harvey made landfall in Texas, causing widespread devastation and flooding in many parts of the state. The storm ultimately caused more than $125 billion in damage and claimed the lives of at least 107 people.
