1. North Dakota was admitted to the Union on November 2, 1889, making it the 39th state in the United States. However, it was not until August 27 of that year that President Benjamin Harrison signed the proclamation admitting North Dakota (and South Dakota) as states.

2. In 1952, the Great Flood of 1952 hit Grand Forks and East Grand Forks, causing widespread damage and displacement. The flood was caused by heavy rainfall and snowmelt, and resulted in the evacuation of over 50,000 people from their homes.

3. On August 27, 1975, North Dakota State University hosted the first-ever prairie dog conference. Over 100 researchers, wildlife managers, and conservationists attended the conference to discuss the ecology and management of prairie dogs in the Great Plains.

4. In 2013, North Dakota became the second state in the United States to legalize industrial hemp production, after Colorado. The state established a pilot program to allow farmers to grow hemp for research purposes, and later expanded the program to allow commercial cultivation.

5. August 27 marks the anniversary of the first passenger flight in North Dakota history. On August 27, 1928, the Northwest Airways began offering flights between Fargo and Winnipeg, Manitoba. The airline was later acquired by Delta Airlines.
