1. On August 28, 1860, Nebraska became the 37th state to join the Union. Originally part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, Nebraska had been a territory since 1854 before it achieved statehood.

2. In 1922, a major fire destroyed the historic Kountze Park neighborhood in Omaha. The fire began on August 28 and quickly spread, destroying over 80 houses and causing nearly $1 million in damages.
