1. In 1836, the first railway in Maine, the Bangor and Piscataquis Canal and Railroad Company, began operations. This railway connected the town of Old Town to Bangor and helped to spur economic growth in the region.

2. On August 29, 1885, the first lighthouse in Maine with a Fresnel lens was lit. The lens, made in Paris, was installed in the Squirrel Point Light in Westport Island.

3. In 1907, a railroad bridge over the Kennebec River in Bath collapsed, killing 5 people and injuring several others. This event prompted the construction of a new, stronger bridge.

4. On August 29, 1923, the first aircraft landing at Portland's new airport, which would later become known as Portland International Jetport, occurred. The plane was a biplane piloted by George Van Sicklen of Boston.

5. In 1962, the town of Skowhegan celebrated its 150th anniversary with a parade, fireworks, and a visit from Maine Governor John H. Reed. The town was incorporated on August 23, 1812, and is known for its annual Skowhegan State Fair.
