2. On August 3, 1900, the first organized baseball game was played in the city of Winston, North Carolina. The game was played between two local teams, the Red Stars and the Greensboro Browns.

3. In 1993, a rare tornado outbreak occurred in eastern North Carolina, causing extensive damage and claiming at least four lives. The worst of the tornadoes struck the town of Bethel, where it destroyed nearly all of the downtown businesses and several homes.

4. In 1835, the first issue of the North Carolina Standard newspaper was published in Raleigh. The newspaper would go on to become one of the most influential publications in the state, covering topics such as politics, education, and social issues.

5. On August 3, 2004, Hurricane Alex made landfall on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, causing extensive flooding and damage to coastal communities. The storm was one of several that hit the state during an unusually active hurricane season that year.
