1. In 1932, the 85th U.S. Army Reserve Division was activated for the first time in North Dakota. Composed mostly of North Dakotan soldiers, this division would go on to serve in World War II.

2. On August 3, 1967, the James River Valley Library System was established in southeastern North Dakota. Today, the library system spans four counties and has 14 member branches.

3. In 1832, explorers and fur traders Pierre Chouteau Jr. and Joseph Renville established the first white settlement in North Dakota, known as Fort Union. The fort served as a key trading hub for over 40 years.

4. August 3, 1907, marked the opening of the first public library in North Dakota, located in Grand Forks. The library is still in operation today and serves as a major resource for the community.

5. North Dakota native and former NFL quarterback Carson Wentz was born on August 3, 1992. Wentz led the North Dakota State University football team to five consecutive national championships before being drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2016.
