1. On August 3, 1859, the first oil well was drilled in Warren, Pennsylvania. The well produced over 300 barrels of oil per day and marked the beginning of the Pennsylvania oil boom.

2. On August 3, 1921, the Pennsylvania State Police was established. The agency was created to provide law enforcement services to rural areas of the state that did not have their own police departments.

3. On August 3, 1952, famous actress and Pennsylvania native, Marilyn Monroe, visited the city of Pittsburgh to promote her new film, "Don't Bother to Knock."

4. On August 3, 1982, the first commercial flight landed at the newly opened Lehigh Valley International Airport in Allentown, Pennsylvania. The airport was built to replace the smaller A-B-E Airport.

5. On August 3, 1996, the Olympic Torch Relay passed through Philadelphia on its way to Atlanta for the Summer Olympics. Thousands of spectators lined the streets to cheer on the torchbearers.
