1. In 1835, the first Ohio state fair was held in Cincinnati. It was established to promote agriculture and educational advancement in the state.
2. On August 30, 1892, the Ohio Anti-Saloon League was founded in Oberlin. The organization was dedicated to the temperance movement and pushing for the prohibition of alcohol.
3. The first American electric streetcar made its debut in Cleveland on August 30, 1884. The car was built by Charles F. Brush and ran on a track powered by his new electric motor.
4. On August 30, 1921, the Akron Beacon Journal became the first newspaper in the United States to publish a crosswords puzzle. The puzzle, created by journalist Arthur Wynne, became a popular addition to newspapers across the country.
5. Ohio astronaut Neil Armstrong, the first person to walk on the moon, was born on August 5, 1930. Armstrong grew up in Wapakoneta and attended Purdue University before joining NASA and making history on July 20, 1969.
