1. Utah became a territory: On August 30, 1850, President Millard Fillmore signed the Organic Act, creating the Territory of Utah, which included parts of what are now Nevada, Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho, and Utah.

2. Utah’s first female mayor: On August 30, 1896, Martha Hughes Cannon became the first woman in the United States elected to state senate. She served in the Utah State Senate from 1897 to 1901 and again from 1903 to 1911, and in her later years, she was a prominent advocate for women’s suffrage.

3. The creation of Zion National Park: On August 30, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson signed the legislation creating Zion National Park. The park features stunning red rock formations, waterfalls, and steep canyons and attracts more than 4 million visitors each year.

4. The men’s Olympic marathon: On August 30, 2002, the men’s marathon was held during the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. It was the first time a marathon was held during the Winter Olympics and was won by Stefano Baldini of Italy, who finished the race in 2:10:55.

5. The Salt Lake Temple renovation: On August 30, 2019, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced that the Salt Lake Temple in Salt Lake City would undergo a significant renovation. The renovation is expected to take four years and will include seismic upgrades, the addition of a new visitor center, and the restoration of historic elements of the temple.
