1. In 1914, the Ohio National Guard was mobilized during the outbreak of World War I. Known as the "Warrensville Riot," the National Guard was called in to quell a riot at a training camp in Warrensville, Ohio.
2. In 1932, Ohio native and aviation pioneer John Glenn was born. Glenn would go on to become the first American to orbit the Earth and later serve as a U.S. senator from Ohio.
3. The state of Ohio ratified the 19th Amendment on August 4, 1920, which gave women the right to vote. Ohio was the 6th state to ratify the amendment.
4. In 1960, Ohio native and future U.S. president Warren G. Harding died. Harding was the 29th U.S. president, serving from 1921 to 1923.
5. On August 4, 1967, the Greater Cleveland Rapid Transit Authority made history by introducing the first automated rapid transit system in the United States. The system, known as the "Rapid," originally operated as a 22-mile route between Cleveland Hopkins International Airport and Windermere station.
