1) On August 4, 1917, the West Virginia state police was formally organized. The force was created in response to the labor unrest in the coal mines, and was designed to suppress strikes and protect property.

2) In 1930, on August 4, the first public swimming pool in the state, the Haddix Community Pool, was opened in Clay County. It was funded by the Works Progress Administration and remained popular in the community for several decades.

3) On August 4, 1978, Vernell "Silk" Williams, a professional boxer from Huntington, won the North American Boxing Federation’s middleweight championship. Williams was known for his fluid and fast-paced style, and had a successful career both in the United States and internationally.

4) In 1863, on August 4, Union General William Averell led a raid into Lewisburg, defeating Confederate forces and capturing supplies and prisoners. The raid was part of the wider campaign to secure the region for the Union army.

5) On August 4, 1927, the Buckhannon-Upshur Airport was opened. It was the first airport in West Virginia to have a cement runway and was used by both commercial and private aircraft. The airport continues to serve the region to this day.
