1) In 1963, the ghost town of White Oaks was designated a National Historic Landmark for its significant contributions to the mining history of New Mexico.

2) On August 5, 1884, the town of Las Vegas, New Mexico was officially incorporated. Las Vegas is home to many historical buildings and was a popular stop on the Santa Fe Trail.

3) The Battle of Mexico City took place on August 5, 1847 during the Mexican-American War. American forces led by General Winfield Scott successfully captured the city.

4) The New Mexico State Fair, which is held annually in Albuquerque, usually begins in early September. However, in 2016, the fair's start date was moved up to August 5th to coincide with National Farmers Market Week.

5) In 1928, Brothers of the Christian Schools opened St. Michael's High School in Santa Fe. The school, which is still in operation today, has produced many notable alumni, including author Cormac McCarthy and former New Mexico governor Gary Johnson.
