1. In 1676, Nathaniel Bacon led a rebellion against Governor William Berkeley in Virginia. The rebellion spread to Maryland, where it fizzled out after the death of Bacon.
2. In 1830, John Work Garrett, who became president of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, was born in Baltimore. Under Garrett's leadership, the B&O became the first railroad to operate a scheduled passenger service in the United States.
3. In 1862, Union troops under General Ambrose Burnside captured Confederate-held Fort Hatteras on the coast of North Carolina. This victory helped to secure the Union blockade of Southern ports.
4. In 1945, a B-25 bomber crashed into the Empire State Building in New York City, killing 14 people. One of the victims was a Maryland resident, Lt. Col. William Franklin Smith Jr., who was piloting the plane at the time of the crash.
5. In 1974, Governor Marvin Mandel was convicted of mail fraud and racketeering in connection with political favors he allegedly granted in exchange for gifts from friends and associates. Mandel resigned and served 19 months in federal prison before being pardoned by President Ronald Reagan in 1981.
