1. In 1835, the Second Seminole War broke out in Florida. The conflict between Seminole Indians and American settlers lasted for seven years and was one of the deadliest in United States history.

2. On December 10, 1915, the world-renowned writer and environmental activist Marjory Stoneman Douglas was born in Minneapolis. Much of her writing and activism was focused on preserving the unique natural resources of Florida, including the Everglades.

3. In 1947, the town of Maitland, Florida was incorporated. Today, Maitland is known for its beautiful parks and historic architecture, as well as its location near some of Florida's most popular tourist destinations.

4. On December 10, 1968, the spacecraft Apollo 8 was launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida. This historic mission marked the first time that humans had ever orbited the Moon.

5. Finally, on December 10, 2005, the Florida Gators football team won the SEC Championship with a 34-7 victory over the LSU Tigers. The win was the first of two straight conference championships for the Gators, who would go on to win the national championship at the end of the 2006 season.
